Outdoor and Indoor Options for Spring Fever

Brainerd, MN—The spring season is upon us and many Minnesotans are looking for a cure for spring fever. Fortunately, there are a variety of outdoor and indoor options in the Brainerd and Baxter, MN, area that will do the trick. Midwesterners know that Mother Nature calls the shots this time of year and it is best to be prepared for a rain (or even snow) one day and blazing heat and sun the next. With that in mind, here is a list of ten things to do in Brainerd this spring.

  1. Hiking: There are hundreds of miles of paved and natural trails to discover. From paved in-town trails that still provide access to nature, to the Northland Arboretum and its 500-acres, to nearby county and state parks. There are a variety of hiking options that will provide fresh air and access to beautiful scenery.
  2. Biking: Many of the same paved trails allow bikes too. The Paul Bunyan Trail starts in Baxter and is 110-miles of paved rail-trail all the way to Bemidji, MN.
  3. Fishing: With more than 400 lakes in Crow Wing County, there is a spot for everyone to cast a line. Enjoy the public docks at Lum Park, Kiwanis Park, Whipple Beach, or launch at one of many public access points.
  4. Golfing: The Brainerd Lakes Area is home to more than 400 holes of golf with courses at every skill level. Early season is a great time to get out and hit the links because of the cooler weather and quieter courses.
  5. Playing at Parks: Did you know there are more than 25 municipal parks between the cities of Baxter and Brainerd? Each one has different features to enjoy like playgrounds, trails, pavilions or water access.
  6. Birding: Follow the migratory pattern of several species of birds who make central Minnesota lakes, and the Mississippi River, a stop on the way home. The Northland Arboretum, Rotary Riverside Park, and Crow Wing State Park are excellent stops for bird enthusiasts.
  7. Family Attractions: Indoor attractions in Brainerd and Baxter range from three water parks, to virtual reality gaming, to bowling and arcades, to an indoor bounce house. There is something for everyone during this season.
  8. Shopping: From boutiques to well-known big-box stores, there are a variety of shopping options in town. If upcycling is your thing, visit one of a dozen antique or thrift stores and hunt for treasures.
  9. Dining and Drinks: From family- to fine-dining there are dozens of excellent restaurants in Brainerd and Baxter to choose from. Plus there is a winery, distillery and brewery, if the craft scene is more your thing.
