Join the Brainerd Lakes Area Newcomers for their September event which is a Downtown Brainerd History Walk. Learn about the past from the best in the area—Carl Faust (see below for a fun bio). He will entertain and inform you about some of the most intriguing aspects of downtown Brainerd. The walk will start and end at Coco Moon in downtown Brainerd (601 Laurel Street). Grab a cup of coffee and join in! The walk will last about one hour. Please RSVP to Paula.

Brainerd Lakes Area Newcomers is for people who have moved to the area in the last three to five years. Learn more on their Facebook page.

Tour Guide Biography: I came here from Iowa in 1955 and brought along my folks, two older brothers and a sister. We were lucky to have grown up in a nice big house right across the street from Gregory Park, and we pretty much lived in that park, coming home only for feeding and sleeping. Our days were spent in the park climbing trees and other things, and skating winter or summer, and eventually, we were allowed to roam a bit as long as we did not “cross the tracks” (we found out one could go UNDER the tracks). When not in the park we were hanging out along the river, hours and hours spent there. To us, it was like the Grand Canyon. Mom would take us shopping to downtown Brainerd weekly, as this was the ONLY place to shop in the entire area, and Nisswa was “closed” in the winter. It was an adventure second only to Paul Bunyan Center, an annual event. Once a year we went to the cities to Dayton’s, another big treat. Only in recent years, while watching old reruns of Andy Griffith and Leave it to Beaver, I realize I was the same age as Opie Taylor and Beaver Cleaver! I DID all those things! These history walks let me go back in time. See, history CAN be fun! — Carl Faust
