As we change seasons look for migrating sparrows, juncos and blackbirds visiting your feeders.  Now is the time to test out your heated bird baths to see if they work.

Trumpeter Swans

Today’s birding report comes from the Brainerd lakes area: Trumpeter Swan, Common Loon, American Coot, Woodduck, Mallard, Canada Goose, Ring-neck Duck, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, White Pelican, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Harris Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Bluebird, Gray Catbird, Northern Cardinal, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Pileated Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Common Raven, Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle, Wild Turkey, Ring-billed Gull, American Robin and Fox Sparrow. It’s a great time to think about bird scaping your yard to help attract more colorful birds!  Ask for native fruiting trees and shrubs to plant around the house or cabin to bring in more birds naturally!

Please also remember many of our Common Loons now have young chicks and watch and listen for the adults giving warning calls when you get too close. This is a dangerous time of the year so be careful and cautious when boating around loons.

• Duluth- Hawk Ridge one of the best fall hawk watching sites in the midwest!  A good day can be over 25,000 hawks flying over!!
  
• Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge – NOW see migrating Sandhill Cranes!
