Snow Goose

Today’s special birding report comes from the Northshore of Minnesota!  A brief visit to Duluth’s Hawk Ridge gave nice views of Turkey Vultures, Bald Eagles, Merlin, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Raven and a few other songbirds migrating down the ridge. The best days for viewing larger groups of birds is when the winds are from the NW! From Duluth I traveled along the old scenic 61 that follows the shoreline of Lake Superior until you reach Two Harbors.  More Bald Eagles and Ravens soaring over the road.  My first day of birding was at the harbor in Grand Marais where the rain kept the birds low and visible.  A good list of migrants include ( Horned Larks, American Pipits, Snow Goose, Red-breasted Merganser, Mallard, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Bald Eagle, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Raven, Crow, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Cedar Waxwing, Common Grackle, Downy Woodpecker, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Turkey Vulture, Black-capped Chickadee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Northern Parula, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Canada Goose, American Robin, Palm Warbler  and Brown Creeper.  Happy Birding!

It’s a great time to think about bird scaping your yard to help attract more colorful birds!  Ask for native fruiting trees and shrubs to plant around the house or cabin to bring in more birds naturally!

Please also remember many of our Common Loons now have young chicks and watch and listen for the adults giving warning calls when you get too close. This is a dangerous time of the year so be careful and cautious when boating around loons.

Be Well and Be Safe and Enjoy watching the birds from home or out at the many trails found in the area.
