National Cheeseburger Day

September 18 is one of the cheesiest days of the year. It’s when the made-up food holiday, National Cheeseburger Day, is celebrated at burger joints and restaurants across the country.

According to Wikipedia and the history of the cheeseburger, by the late 19th century the opening of the Great Plains to cattle ranching had made it possible for many Americans to consume beef almost daily. The hamburger was, and remains, one of the cheapest sources of beef in America.

A cheeseburger is a hamburger . . . topped with cheese. It may include a variety of toppings and cheeses. Traditional toppings include lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles; however, many restaurants have taken the cheeseburger in interesting directions.
